Zoom! Another week...where did time go?

Self-awareness, self-efficacy, and accurate self-perception...these were the topics presented in morning assembly with Dr. Schneider that we have been learning and reflecting on in Town Meeting and Project time. The discussions added optimism, pessimism and realistic viewpoints -- and how to create balance in ourselves to be in a healthy place.

We are writing up a storm in all three grade levels: expository, narrative, and poetry! Our days have been filled with reading model text and then getting started on pieces of our own. Fourth Graders have been encouraged to enter the Vision and Voice Contest (see previous blog post), and Third and Second should too!

Second has been focusing on understanding nonfiction -- looking at those important text features -- to help up better understand what we are reading. It was exciting to actually learn to draw a map to scale in class!

Fourth graders are learning about geometry! This week we identified lines, rays, parallel lines, and perpendicular lines, We also classified triangles and quadrilaterals.
Third graders had  an assessment over fractions and then started a geometry unit. We began with classifying quadrilaterals.
Second graders solved  division story problems and ended the week with a division assessment. They also enjoyed problem solving while completing Sunshine math.

We've been working hard on our African American biography projects. We've synthesized our research from various sources and are have created some pretty stellar projects.

We wrapped up our week with a Breakfast & the Paper, followed by a superb Kiker Keynotes performance. We are so proud of the efforts of our musical classmates--great job!

Weekend, here we come!

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
