Back from Break and Ready to GO!

It's been a great week catching up on all of the spring break adventures!

In language arts, all three grades have been exploring the blend of nonfiction with fiction. Using a subject, theme, or event in the novel we are reading, we have examined nonfiction text to extend our understanding and keep our nonfiction reading muscles working. We have active Spelling Centers again, and have added self chosen small group Writing Centers as well. We developed rubrics to help us know what is expected in our work, It's helped keep us on track and shooting for specific improvements. In Fourth Grade writing, we've been incorporating some Verso responses into our unique FANBOYS sentences (compound sentences), Ask your 4th grader to show you what we've done! Second and Third are honing in on grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary this week.

In math 4th graders have enjoyed using protractors to measure and draw angles. We also started a new computer program called Think Through Math. First we took a placements test and then started working on TTM lessons.
Our 3rd graders learned how to find the area of rectangles and plane figures. They also learned to use multiplication to find the area of a rectangle and ended the week with an assessment over area.
Second graders learned about 3-D solids. They used manipulatives to identify the faces, edges, and vertices of a figure. We also used cubes to build and compose 3-D solids.

In science, we've transformed into meteorologists, learning about weather patterns, tools, and why it's important to study weather. Students used technology to better understand weather maps, symbols, and forecasts. While fourth grade completed a Weather Websurf, second and third grade used the History feature o Wunderground to check the weather on the day they were born!

We've incorporated some new brain breaks. (Ask a second grader how they help us learn and why we try to use brain breaks frequently in science and social studies.)

Second grade also learned a new game called "I Have, Who Has". Our version involved some counting and number sense.

Hoppy Weekend! ;o)
