April is almost in the books...

April's nearly gone!

We wrapped up this month by sharing our last round of Monthly Homework. It was a great opportunity our learners to reflect on all of their accomplishments, their favorite assignments, and which choices challenged them the most.

Short text, short text, short text! All three grade levels have been practicing our margin notes and signpost interpretations with a variety of text. It's amazing to see the deep thinking that occurs when we slow down to notice and note what is going on in literature.

We've been writing narratives and expository to keep our writing muscles warmed up.

In math this week 4th and 3rd graders used dry erase boards to review STAAR questions. They used the boards to explain their thinking and show an equation for solving the problems.

Second graders practiced telling time. We used clocks to show the time and learn about the hour and minutes hands. We ended the week with Sunshine math.

Fourth graders have been reading and investigating to understand not only who came before us in Texas, but why. This week we became archaeologists to uncover the mystery of the skeleton found on the La Belle!

Third grade spent the week learning about government services, how they are funded, and how our communities would be affected without them. They also shared their Texas Capitol tours with a gallery walk...they loved the opportunity to see each others' work!

Second graders are enjoying Life Cycle Unit by learning more about their caterpillars. This  week, we identified the needs and body parts of our caterpillars, then compared them to our own! We love observing them everyday as they eat and grow and spin silk.

We released some to the butterfly garden so they could continue their growth in a natural habitat...we hope to see them as chrysalises soon!

Meanwhile, our own caterpillars are planning on changing right here in the classroom! We look forward to sharing more about their metamorphosis next week.

In project, our second week of our second rotation came to a close, culminating with more unique expressions of what we have learned about preserving the Earth and our environment. Again, the excitement for learning and expressing things we are interested in and matter to us is amazing!

Enjoy the weekend,
SBLC Crew

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
