Mindfully Moving Through the Week!

This week, Halloween started us with a burst of energy, and we've been working those mindful muscles the whole week long! It's been helpful to remember that when we are feeling excited, tired, or even just distracted, we can get back on track by mindfully breathing or wiggling our toes!

We also were assigned The Pledge this week, and we enjoyed being up on stage leading the Kiker community.

We documented the events of this upcoming month in our Agenda calendars, so if you weren't able to take a peek, it's got important reminders for the next few weeks. We are working on a small mandala to help us unwind and focus on what we are grateful for, and Mrs. Mangels read us a wonderful book, Chopsticks, to help us see problems as opportunities!

In project, we are preparing for our Keyhole Garden build. We've been creating spreadsheets, learning about healthy soil composition, and digging deeper into the idea of scarcity, it's causes, and it's consequences. We are finding real world opportunity to apply all our content areas!

In ELA,  Second Grade has begun an author study of Kevin Henkes and are learning the six signposts for narrative reading. They have published their first poem in their anthologies, and have been keeping pace with spelling and word work as well.

Third Grade readers have learned the incredible feeling of working hard and growing our minds in poetry analysis. We have found that figurative language can be challenging to understand, and with practice and a "I'm thinking through it," attitude, we can make amazing interpretation of poet's work. We have also continued our Long Walk to Water study, along with spelling and word work.

Fourth Graders have embarked on a historical journey in creating character vignettes for a refugee in WWII. They are actively applying their knowledge of poems, literary devices, character traits and evidence, as well as their knowledge of the end of WWII in the Baltic Sea area to tell the story of their character. They are using Google Classroom, so they have access to work on this at any time. Feel free to ask them to show it to you! We began an expository piece relating to the topic of refugees. It's exciting to see them so engaged!

Fourth graders have continued their study of Texas regions and history. After examining primary sources from the fateful day at Spindletop, they are creating a digital resource to explain the significance of oil in Texas.

Third graders shared their Texas geography quizzes with their classmates. They also learned about the voting process and elected their own grade-level representative for Student Council.


Second grade cartographers continued their exploration of map features and also learned about the voting process. 



All SBLC mathematicians started the week with some spooky math.  4th graders explored multiples of 6 and 8 with some insect and spider riddles.  These required persistence and strategic use of multiplication and division concepts.


















3rd grade explored skip counting patterns through the multiples of 10 this week, noticing all kinds of interesting patterns along the way.  They created towers to explore division concepts and solved word problems using various multiplication representations.

2nd grade has been busy with all kinds of word problems involving addition and subtraction.  They're becoming experts at showing multiple strategies and checking their work for accuracy.  We also exploring how to use addition to subtract and will continue with this important concept next week.
