Opportunities Aplenty!

This week we've looked for OPPORTUNITY -- ways we can actively help others, stretch ourselves, and reflect on mistakes. It's been great taking responsibility of our choices, being aware of times when we can step up, and how we can be intentional about what we do when we recognize the opportunities we have.
In ELA, we have been moving through our novels and finishing our writing pieces. 3rd and 4th have been using the Benchmark Test as a teaching tool -- an opportunity to practice with lots of teacher feedback. We were given the option to give it on one day or to space it out over a few, and we chose to take a few days as to really go deep with reflecting on our work when go over it. We ended the week with the 3rd Grade Vocabulary Parade -- fabulous words and representations!!
2nd and 3rd grade mathematicians explored more measurement this week, We discussed the importance of estimation and then put our estimating skills to work with length, area, capacity, and weight stations. 4th grade reviewed accuracy strategies from the benchmark like using key words, rereading, and showing each part of their solutions on paper.  They're also learning financial literacy concepts, so we've had some interesting discussions this week about the importance of financial institutions.

In science, 2nd and third graders continued their study of plants and ecosytems with some dissections! First, we dissected flowers to understand how each part supports pollination and plant reproduction and then we dissected text to better understand natural disasters like drought. Our ecologists are working with partners to create presentations on drought mitigation. They will be experts in no time!

Second graders also greeted some new organisms. Today, our Painted Lady caterpillars arrived! We loved observing our little insects and can't wait to watch them grown and change.

Fourth graders continued to build their ecosystem schema, exploring nonfiction text about aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Some of you will get to observe these organisms firsthand since eco-columns went home today!

Fourth graders have also deepened their understanding of the mission system in Texas--we even took a virtual field trip to San Antonio to visit and explore some of the missions.

Enjoy your weekend!

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
