Flying into May

What a fabulous first week of May! We have been focusing on our calming and energizing strategies. We learned a few more ways to use breathing to help us, as well as some cross-the-body movements. We encouraged each other to be aware of opportunities to use these strategies, and have been building in these healthy habits.

In ELA, we have finished all our novel studies, and have clamored for "one more book" before the end of the year. We will see!  We've been following our characters so closely -- coming to a close with them has us actually missing them!! We all finished publishing our work for our anthologies as well! Big Work!

In math, we've finished a 2-week review of concepts.  It's been exciting to see how many meaningful connections we've discovered between topics and how much our math vocabulary has grown so far this year. We played several team games as part of our review work and decided our favorites were "Mathoo" and "Crumple and Shoot."

Fourth graders have continued the study of the Texas Revolution and after choosing a key figure during this time period, are creating a virtual keepsake box. Their research and creativity is coming together in the form of some fantastic presentations!

Second and third graders continued their study of life cycles. Today, they worked in partnerships to demonstrate their understanding by building a model of an organism's life cycle.

Second graders have also enjoyed observing our live organisms--we had our first butterfly emerge from its chrysalis this week! We'll continue studying our flying friends into next week, then set them free to be in their natural habitat.

Second graders became junior entomologists yesterday on our Incredible Insects field trip with Austin Nature and Science Center. We collected insects, practiced classifying insects with a fun game, and learned more about organisms related to insects. It was an exciting day!

Third and Fourth Graders will be taking STAAR on Monday (math) and Tuesday (reading). Please have them get as much time as possible outside this weekend! Have them get some good rest each evening too. Pump them with positive encouragement as well -- we know they are ready and well-prepared!

Enjoy the weekend!
