Taking Off

It's been a FABULOUS week in the SBLC! Seems like nature has sure had an influence on our time together...cosmic events, temperature soaring, and even Harvey...wow!

We love our space and are developing new routines to get us from place to place!

Just a quick reminder that your child should be sharing their agendas with you daily and we'd like you to initial at the bottom. Also, the four covered notebooks (ELA, Science, Math, and Social Studies) need to be returned no later than Monday! Thank you!

SBLC mathematicians have spent the week rediscovering mathematical habits through a variety of games and challenges.  These habits include making connections between concepts, creating/building a visual to accompany number work, and remembering that a deep understanding is more important than speed (especially when you're first learning a new concept!).  We were also reminded that our brains grow the most when we're doing challenging work and learning from mistakes.

Some of our mathematicians making number work visual and using logical reasoning in the Game of Totals:

In science, the solar eclipse sparked curiosity about space and led us to explore the sun, Earth, and moon.  We watched some demonstrations and researched, and now students are creating their own models to demonstrate their understanding of how the sun, Earth, and moon work together.  They are so excited to build using our new makerspace, so a few space model pics will be coming soon.

In ELA, we've been reorienting ourselves with wonderful books, using this first week as an opportunity to select books that may be unfamiliar to us. We've been practicing authentic reading and many of us are forming relationships with our characters right away. Our emphasis this year is REAL reading = understanding. We know that if we are still reading to "get our 20 minutes done," we have been challenged by Mrs. Forrest to begin a QUEST for that special book that switches reading from a task to an opportunity.

In Social Studies, we've been SBLC Founding Fathers in drafting our new SBLC Heartbeat...our class Constitution. We've been using teamwork to decide what is really important as citizens of the SBLC, and we have gone through several revisions!

We've also been working on some special BTSN videos...stay tuned!

Just know we are so glad to be back -- see you on Tuesday, August 29th in the Library at 6 pm!

Your SBLC copilots,
Jen and Jewellyn

Scavenger Hunt: Communities & Heritage

*Parents, this is an in-class assignment. :) Hello, citizens of SBLC! Today, you are going on a scavenger hunt with your partner to explore some of the communities you belong to and the heritage of our state. Remember to treat each other the way we agreed in our SBLC Constitution and--this is VERY important-- read the directions under YOUR grade level!  And of course...have fun! :) *2nd Grade: Our Communities Directions : 1. Add Scavenger Hunt to the Table of Contents in your Social Studies Notebook. Turn to the the next clean page to record your answers. 2. Use the link below each question to find your answers. Record your answers in complete sentences! 3. If you finish early, post a comment with your favorite fact. Then, explore the websites to discover other interesting facts. :) Example : (click on the picture to make it bigger) 1. School The SBLC is a part of  _____________ Elementary.
