Third Week In the Books!

Happy Friday!

We have been hard at work, settling into our routines.

In Language Arts, we've been constructing letters, learning multi-paragraph structure and how to elaborate our main ideas with specific details (You've probably received this already!). We've been digging into our library to find those Just Right books, building our stamina, and monitoring our engagement with our characters.

We've explored several books about United States Flag and Anthem, the Constitution, and our Pledge of Allegiance. We analyzed the meaning of the words, the symbolism, and the document's contents. We examined the SAY (What they are/what we see), the MEAN (the meaning behind, the meaning )of, the sacrifice and thought put into them) and the MATTER (Why this is important). We are learning our history not just to check off boxes, but so that we can move forward as active citizens, in mutual respect, investing in our country's founding beliefs into our future.

In math, we've explored place value concepts in many different ways.  We've created charts to help us organize important vocabulary like thousands, millions, and billions.  We analyzed patterns through the charts and then started creating a visual representation of 10's importance in our base-ten place value system.  We quickly discovered that 10,000 is MUCH more than 1,000 and will take some time to cut, so we're working over time to build our visual place value chart.

We also collaborated to solve our first big problem of the year.  It's called the Deca Tree and helped us build our mental math muscles and discover patterns using multiples of 10.  We also worked in groups with each mathematician fulfilling a specific role to support his or her group. We continue to build our teamwork muscles and had many opportunities to challenge each other's thinking.  Groups are presenting their thinking process, including the mistakes that were part of their fabulous struggle. They're showing evidence for their solution using pictures, numbers, and words. We're also working to generalize from the learning in the Deca Tree problem by considering the patterns or strategies we used that we could apply in future problem solving opportunities.  Here's a pic of our mathematical community at work:

In science, we read about inspiring notebooks from famous scientists and even studied photographs to infer how they used this important tool.  We're now using our wonder and science notebooks for all kinds of purposes.  Our first classroom peg arrived yesterday, so there will be lots of observations and notebook entries to start our tree frog investigation next week.

Our outside design space is taking shape! Thank you for rallying behind us yet again to get this project underway! The kids finished their landscape design and we are using their ideas to make the space usable!

Look over your child's Take Off and Landing Notebook this weekend, and enjoy seeing an inside glimpse of what a family they are to one another.

Join the PTA asap and keep those Enrichment fees coming!
