Songs, Dances, and More!

This week we wrapped up some graded opportunities, and we completed some self reflection and evaluation. We looked at expectations via criteria charts and rubrics to help us identify areas of growth and to set goals.

This week Third Grade enjoyed the ballet at Austin's Long Center. The dapper dudes and dazzling damsels watched Act II of The Nutcracker.

On Thursday, we attended the Kiker Keynotes' Winter Concert too. It put us in a festive holiday mood!

In reading, we have been summarizing Winnie's journey across the Atlantic towards the battlefield with the Corps. She's also winning the hearts of all the soldiers and horses she's meeting. We are analyzing her characteristics and monitoring how situations now are giving us a glimpse into how she will handle future experiences.

Expository drafting, editing, and revising are in full swing! We have used model pieces to help us better our writing and evaluate where we are now. Our sentence analysis/grammar have continued focusing on quotation marks and the punctuation choices that involves.

We finished up our study on maps and globes this week. Knowing where we are and how to use these tools to navigate is a crucial, life-long skill!

On Friday, we held our semi-annual SBLC store! Thanks to all the volunteers and the donations == your help made it a huge success! The kids loved the opportunity to spend, save, or donate and there were smiles all around.

We also started a fraction investigation in math this week. We know that the two numbers in a fraction represent a relationship between parts and whole. Our work involved lots of hands-on experiences with pattern blocks, dot paper, and discoveries about fraction and division connections. By week's end, we all created a colorful fraction resource for our notebooks so we can have our own visual representation as a tool anytime.

We also have some new fluency resources that are a huge hit with SBLC mathematicians. They're called wrap-ups and are available for all 4 operations in case you'd like another tools for building confidence with those facts at home. Here's the link to multiplication and division: Learning Wraps

Each of our science groups chose a topic for their science fair experiment and brainstormed areas of focus for their testable question. They also started working in their science fair booklets and are excited to focus their topic and start building background knowledge.

There are some important events next week, but the kids have them all written in the monthly calendar section of their agendas. Take a moment to get up to speed on some daily fun and have a great weekend!
