No...we are hard at work as usual!
You will be getting a letter today -- a product of our work in ELA this week. We are inviting you to Kiker Beautification Day on April 13th, and we are enlisting your help to finish our PBL Project to remodel our Kiker playground. They outlined, drafted, peer edited, and finalized these pieces - enjoy, and hope you can come!
In reading, we are further along in Melody's journey. We've been summarizing, analyzing, and looking at why the author has selected experiences and how they tie into the character's struggle. We also have worked with short text, preparing ourselves for a specific type of looking at comprehension -- multiple choice assessments.
Our mathematicians have been busy building accuracy with our weekly Monday Match-it. We're noticing that these puzzles are feeling easier and faster -- all great signs that we're building efficiency and automaticity! We wrapped up our study of 2-D and 3-D shapes by creating riddles that highlighted shape attributes and key vocabulary. We played a game called Polygon Capture that helped us notice relationships among shapes, and we created a display of 3-D straw sculptures that are works of art for sure! The week ended with financial Friday and new vocabulary/concepts to build our financial literacy.
In science we've been busy studying plant structures and their functions. We know that flowers, seeds, and fruit all support the life cycle of many common plants. We learned about the world's largest tree, a sequoia named General Sherman, and have been considering exactly how a tree could get so large. So far we've considered that a plant/tree's leaves have stomata that allow air exchange, that plants take in water through their roots, and that photosynthesis occurs. We have more questions about exactly what photosynthesis means, so we'll chase those questions next week. In the meantime, we headed out to the keyhole garden to observe, harvest, sketch, and taste a few leaves from the keyhole garden. Many of us tried new varieties of kale or lettuce and it was a tasty way to end the week!
Have a fabulous weekend!
