So many choices in one short week! Our morning meetings have focused on ways we can lean into good at every opportunity. We can choose to lean into good and connect with our learning community, lifting up the others around us with words and actions. We can feel gratitude for the fabulous struggles that come with deep, meaningful learning. We can choose to cultivate a sense of inner peace with mindfulness strategies and we can use the transformative power of a mindful breath.
In math, we're building our understanding of fractions and started by constructing a fraction kit. This is a concrete tool that allows each of us to build benchmark fractions like one whole, halves, and fourths. We compared the number of halves to fourths and are starting to build an understanding of how a fraction is a relationship between a part and a whole. Our number talk today challenged us to brainstorm fractions that are equivalent to 1/2. We explored using numbers and pictures why 4/8 and 2/4 are both equivalent to 1/2. This is a powerful concept to deeply understand and we'll continue to consider equivalency using many different representations.
Our SBLC science fair groups are working through the scientific method, setting up their various experiments around our space and noticing the many ways that science and math are related. You can ask your scientist to tell you their testable question, to describe their experiment design, and to tell their hypothesis. Over time, we'll collect data and will be able to share results in the weeks to come. Exciting work!
In reading, we have read text that expresses a story from a different point of view. We also have spent time reading nonfiction text about our Texas Hero tree and the events it has "seen." Our Kiker online and in person library resources have come in handy as we are looking for reliable sources for information.
In writing, we have been creating and examining types of sentences, and using their patterns to write paragraphs. We have discovered it's much more interesting to read a piece of work that varies the sentence type. It's also WAY more fun to challenge our minds to write that way! We spent time exploring compound words, vowel pairs, and homonyms in our word work.
We have been able to highlight Texas history through our Living Witness tree study. Because we are going to write a book together about what these oak trees have seen, we are becoming experts at the events that occured. There's a huge timeline taking shape on our front board tying together dates and events...giving us a better undertanding of each battle, the flags, and the people in our state's history.
Have a wonderful weekend!
