Welcome Back!

This week we continued our focus on integrity. We thought about how we can reach out and be a friend, how we can do things without being asked, and we can take care of materials (treat them like treasures!).

In ELA, we have looked with a writer's eye at editing. It is essential that we look at our writing thoroughly after we draft to insure accurate spelling and punctuation. We are learning to embrace that extra effort it takes to go back and check carefully.

We revisited our Texas tree Vignettes too. We revised with fresh eyes. It was important to check back with our research to make sure our stories were accurate. It was a bit messy, but we are so glad that, with this later look, we were able to create pieces that will help our readers understand the events more clearly.

Writers are also drafting important expository text based off of their heart maps. Ask them about their subjects! We are enjoying writing about things we care about!

In reading, we used our 5 word strategy again with nonfiction text. We're growing those muscles of determining importance. We are also learning about Nova's memories in Planet Earth is Blue. Nova is giving us a glimpse into the past, and we are learning more about her with each page.

We continued our work with measurement this week. Our mini metric stations kept us actively engaged in measuring capacity, mass, and distances. At each station, our mathematicians estimated first, then measured accurately using a triple beam balance, a graduated cylinder, or a meter stick. We are also growing our muscles with measurement conversions so we can move flexibly between liters and milliliters or centimeters and meters. The week ended with some story problems involving elapsed time and developing our understanding of capacity units like gallons, quarts, and pints. SBLC mathematicians were invited to look through their refrigerators and pantries this weekend looking for labels that showed units of capacity or weight. These numbers and mathematical vocabulary are all around us!

Remember that next week, 4th is going to the Symphony on Tuesday. Dressy attire and a sack lunch please!
