Ending the Week With Teamwork!

We enjoyed today's Track and Field events! It was fun to wear our new shirts, but more importantly, we had a lot of neat opportunities to problem solve, work as a team, and show great sportsmanship! Thanks for all those who helped out in making today a success -- this is a memory they will treasure!

In project, we continue to build on our knowledge of the brain, and the connection with our body. We have discussed using different breathing to calm, energize or re-set ourselves in different situations. We also covered some important Cybersafety in order to get started using our technology regularly.

In reading, Second Grade has been working hard on learning to summarize. We also have been working on analyzing characters and providing evidence from the text that gave us our thinking. The writing focus has been on letter form and substance. We also started three new routines for our Word Work: Snap and Clap, Rhyme and Read, and Making Big Words.

Third Graders have been actively working on knowing sensory and figurative language. We are growing in our ability to write it ourselves as well. We have finished three final drafts of poems, which involved drafting, revising, editing, and finally publishing. Very busy!

Poetry projects are wrapping up in Fourth. It has been so exciting to see them motivated to take work home and do extra -- even when it isn't assigned! :) They have learned to analyze and then write three different kinds of poems, and then make a presentation to explain to others what they know. They needed to use/identify/explain the sensory/figurative language they used, and add images to show. Impressive independent pacing and work!! We are about 3/4 into Fish in a Tree  in reading, and on the edge of our seats as we are watching Ally change.

We became cartographers this week in social studies! After realizing how often we use maps (driving to new places, finding seats at a concert, hiking on a new trail), we identified and reviewed map features.

Second graders made their own version of Google maps by creating a book with their specific location. They described their street and zoomed all the way out to their continent!

Third graders worked with partners to create a map of their own imaginary town. Applying their knowledge of map features in this way provided an opportunity for their creativity to shine!

Fourth grade identified some key features of Texas geography. They created overlay maps that included regions, cities, rivers, and surrounding landforms. Such great effort!

In math fourth graders worked on adding and subtracting decimals this week. We also played a game with a partner in our motivational math workbook called Color them All. They had to spin a spinner and the decimal they landed on they colored that many squares on a hundreds grid. Third graders estimated then subtracted or added numbers. We played a game in our motivational math workbooks with a partner rolling 3 dice, spinning a spinner, and rounding numbers.  Second graders worked on adding and subtracting numbers this week. We also read story problems and come up the the equation,

Have a great long weekend!

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
