It's Beginning to Feel Like...October!

This week we have been exploring the parts of the brain deeper in order to understand how to maximize our focus and to control our emotional responses in situations. We discussed mindful reponses vs. unmindful reactions and identified examples of each. We found that when we have the PFC, amygdala, and hippocampus working together, we have something like an orchestra going on...making a harmonious "sound."

In reading and language arts, Second Grade has been learning about how reading and writing intertwine. We have been learning "Show, Don't Tell." When a book no longer has pictures, we can't watch the character's expressions to see how they feel, nor do they usually just state the characters emotion. We need to use inference to figure it out. Using clue words like "said words" (whispered, yelled , etc.), and description of what their face and body looks like, we can know how to make our voice sound as we read. As writers, we can also do that same thing! We wrote vignettes on characters that were mad and sad, without using telling words. We also had an opportunity to teach Ms. Toman's First Grade all the things we knew about reading fluently by reading Mo Willem's Piggie and Gerald books.

Third Grade finished their novel! We examined and then explained how an author uses climax to show the reader a turning point in the character and then how the remainder of the book is the character resolving the key struggle faced in the book. We have been writing, critiquing and revising our personal poems, and discovering description and precise words add life to them.

Fourth Grade is working on a sensory description project about poetry. We analyzed and discovered what "rules" govern a diamante and cinquain poem, and are writing our own. We are designing and creating our own presentation in order to teach the Third and Second Graders. We are planning to instruct on how to use precise and descriptive language to evoke feelings and images in our readers. We are actively watching Ally in our novel as she's making some changes...and honing our theory of her true struggle. We held a passionate and interesting discussion about the difference between the meanings of the words "alone" and "lonely."

In science, second grade has explored the Scientific Method by continuing their leaf investigation. We've also observed and measured objects to describe their properties.

Third graders conducted their first experiment with variables to see how size affects the distance a ball will roll, then created a graph to display their data a draw a conclusion based on their results.

Fourth grade had the opportunity to plan their Skittle experiment. Based on the variable that they chose (amount of water, type of liquid, temperature of water), they worked in teams to identify supplies needed and steps required to complete the experiement. Ask your super scientist about their results.

In math this week fourth graders learned about comparing and ordering decimals. We also wrote decimals as fractions and money amounts. We worked with a team to put decimal cards in order least to greatest. On Friday we worked together to solve problems on Sunshine Math.

Third graders used place value to add three digit numbers. We also counted money and used manipulatives to added up the number of bills and coins. On Friday we completed Sunshine Math.

Second graders modeled four digit numbers with base ten blocks. They also wrote the numbers in standard and expanded forms and used greater than and less than symbols to compare the numbers. We ended the week ordering the the four digit numbers and working together to comple Sunshine Math.
