Math Mania and Thankfulness

Math Mania Monday!!

We had a great time focusing on all things math-related! We began our day by identifying and sharing important numbers in our lives (birth dates, how many people in our family, how many pets we have, etc).

In Mrs. Forrest's block, we discovered a very wise little girl who tricked a king with mathematical doubling. She asked for a single grain of rice the first day, and then double each amount on consecutive 30 days rather than a lump amount. She ended up with rice in the billions!

We investigated how much we'd get if we got a quarter a day, doubled each day, for the 12 days of Christmas...my advice to you: DON'T AGREE! ;)

In Ms. Reiman's block we explored with geoboards and played different math games to practice the skills we've learned so far. On Tuesday we solved Thanksgiving story problems and worked on   Thanksgiving turkey trot math problems.

In Mrs. Blake's class, we played a few rounds of Buzz, one of our favorite math games. Have your mathematician explain how to play!

Afterward, we read Rainbow Fish and saw the main character evolve from vain and selfish to giving and kind, then had an opportunity to practice our estimation skills. How many scales would we need to make our own Rainbow Fish (shiny scale included)? We estimated the area, counted how many scales we would actually need, then compared and calculated the difference between the two.

We also created mini "thankful trees." These gave us a chance to reflect and also prepare for the holidays.

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
