That's a Wrap!

It's a wrap on another busy week. Fourth Grade rocked the house with their amazing 3 performances! We are so proud of their hard work!

In reading, Second Grade have continued their comparing/contrasting with two books about a character who wants to adopt a pet. We've been hard at work with our spelling, word building, and using word patterns to help us with a variety of words.

All grade levels learned Mountain Language, a way to practice and actively apply grammar skills. We also completed an example of a homonym routine that we are incorporating in our new writing rotations.

Third Grade closely examined A Long Walk to Water using all the Bloom's Taxonomy Levels. They were blown away by how deeply with their thinking they can go, especially using evaluation, synthesis, and analysis.

Fourth Grade has been hard at work with expository writing. They penned a piece for administrators to read which explained how our "lunch families" works to make the cafeteria a better place. They have also been analyzing sentence structure to understand complex and compound sentences.

In math fourth graders learned about the Distributive Property of Multiplication. We used arrays and broke them into two smaller arrays to represent two digit by two digit multiplication equations. We call this an area model.

Third graders also learned about the Distributive Property of Multiplication. They used tiles to make arrays and then broke them into two smaller arrays. We also learned about the Commutative Property of Multiplication. Which is taking the two factors and switching them around. 2 X 3 = 6     3 X 2 = 6

Second grade wrote and solved addition and subtraction story problems. They sure are getting good at them. Some of the problems we are solving are three steps. Wow!

Our scientists culminated their Energy Unit by applying their knowledge of energy forms to everyday activities. They created comic strips to idenitfy how various forms of energy--heat, light, sound, electrical, potential, and kinetic--help them accomplish their favorite activity or hobby.

We ended our week with a focus on gratitude. After each adding a leaf to our Gratitude Tree, we realized we have a lot to be thankful for!

Happy Weekend,
SBLC Trio

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
