Coming Closer to the Home Stretch...

This week we have been finishing the last of our end of year assessments. 3rd and 4th took STAAR math and reading on Monday and Tuesday. They have also completed a reading fluency assessment with Mrs. Forrest as well. We are proud of them!

We are finishing up our products in project, and will be sharing them with one another next week. It's been great learning so much about our world and how to care for it!

In language arts, Second has been working on nonfiction summarization. We are learning to focus on the main idea rather than retell. They are also drafting a narrative for completion next week.

Third Grade have completed narratives, and are finalizing an expository draft. Our book, PAX, has us mesmerized. We are following the two characters closely as they help each other.

Fourth Grade worked on using a specific literary device in a third person narrative. It's exciting to see them craft using point of view, suspense, slowing time...and they are discovering more about the Second World War through Boy on the Wooden Box.

We held our final Breakfast and the Paper Friday morning, where we definitely enjoyed catching up on all the current events in our world through Scholastic News and Time for Kids.

In math, fourth graders are working in teams to complete different projects centered around math. Third graders also have a  project they are working on that involves designing spaces for small people to live in. They will design the space using graph paper then tell the area of the space.

Second graders are learning about fractions. They identified halves, fourths, and eights and drew lines to show equal parts.

Fourth graders have continued expanding their knowledge of Texas History. Using some nonfiction text and their signpost strategies, they are analyzing and questioning to get a complete understanding of how our land was settled.

Third grade has continued their study of adaptations and applied their understanding during a nature walk around campus.

They recorded organisms they observed using adaptations to survive, like vines gripping and clinging.

We even spotted a spittlebug protecting itself within its self-induced foamy fortress!

Second grade concluded their live Life Cycle Unit. After spending some final moments with the Painted Lady Butterflies they observed through all four stages, it was time to say farewell and return them to their natural habitat.

But not before a few butterfly kisses!

A bittersweet day for many of us, but we were so happy to see them enjoying the flowers in our butterfly garden.

We returned to the classroom for a toast to our lepidopteran friends and even honored them with proboscises of our own.

We are wrapping up with our own life cycle plays! Our entomologists spent today writing scripts with their partners and will be ready to perform next week.

Enjoy the weekend!

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
