We Blinked...and It's the End of the Week!

This week we started a new routine with Learning Habits. We know it took some getting used to, but the students were fabulous in following through and asking questions until we mastered it! We changed them in an effort to work our communication muscle between home and school, and to help kids dig a bit deeper in what they are practicing at home. Thanks so much for your support!

We are using a weekly theme to focus our TEAM meetings and project time. That theme is the direct link to our Learning Habits. Reflecting and reinforcing a sole theme will afford deeper understanding and practice!

This week in ELA we continued precision in our nonfiction text features, margin notes, reading with stamina, and thinking about our reading. Mrs. Forrest is meeting with us individually and listening to readers -- and so impressed with how much growth they are making!! In 4th, we completed our letters to Ms. Septys as well as composed two expository outlines in depth. Third Graders are writing nonfiction summaries and have reviewed their Benchmarks to set goals as readers. Second Graders have explored symbolism, theme, and Civil Rights through several fabulous (and thought-provoking) read alouds.

Fourth grade got a hands-on dose of Texas history at the Bob Bullock museum. After viewing several artifacts and exhibits, we had the opportunity to watch the Star of Destiny. Our SBLC historians loved the multi-sensory effects of this presentation depicting significant events and figures from our state's past. They continued their study back in the classroom by investigating the La Belle shipwreck.

Third grade used some nonfiction text (and some Schoolhouse Rock!) to deepen our understanding of the three branches of our government, the role of each branch, and how they work together.

Second grade revised, edited, and completed their biography presentations. Their research and revisions paid off--we have some fantastic slideshows to prove it! We can't wait to see each other's work in a gallery walk next week.

This week in math, fourth graders wrapped up their fraction work with a recipe project and some extensions using spreadsheets and other online resources.  All of the 4th grade thinking and our big fraction/decimal number line has inspired our third graders to launch their own fraction unit.  So far we've started with lots of concrete work folding, cutting, and counting fractions of all shapes and sizes.  Second grade has been busy counting coins in many different ways, and it's been fun to hear their reflections on how they've gotten more accurate and efficient when they skip count with coins. We ended the week with a coin bank puzzle and a little detective work using videos and photos as clues.

We discovered this video earlier in the year, but thought you would enjoy it. It really gives food for thought regarding our kids. Hope you enjoy it, and we'd love to hear your thoughts.

Enjoy the weekend,

Scavenger Hunt: Communities & Heritage

*Parents, this is an in-class assignment. :) Hello, citizens of SBLC! Today, you are going on a scavenger hunt with your partner to explore some of the communities you belong to and the heritage of our state. Remember to treat each other the way we agreed in our SBLC Constitution and--this is VERY important-- read the directions under YOUR grade level!  And of course...have fun! :) *2nd Grade: Our Communities Directions : 1. Add Scavenger Hunt to the Table of Contents in your Social Studies Notebook. Turn to the the next clean page to record your answers. 2. Use the link below each question to find your answers. Record your answers in complete sentences! 3. If you finish early, post a comment with your favorite fact. Animal Adaptations at the Austin Nature & Science Center

Today, SBLC Fourth Graders visited the Austin Nature & Science Center.  We learned about mammals, birds, reptiles and their various adaptations. Our mammal friends included a rabbit...  a ferret... some mice... and a bat! We explored the traits of birds with a ring-necked dove...  a quail...  and an adorable (and blind) screech owl.  We saw first-hand that a bird's bones are hollow (ask your student to tell you why)!  We also learned about the four types of reptiles (again, your student should be able to share those with you) and the bravest of us even touched one! The overall consensus among Fourth Grade SBLC Scientists: a very fun and exciting day of learning! Hooray!
