We're finishing strong with the 3rd quarter of the year! SBLC students took time to reflect on topics studied, artifacts created, and overall quality of work in portfolios. They're proud of how understanding has grown across subject areas and they're excited to share notebooks with you.
In math, students have chosen a real-world data set that is meaningful and interesting to them. After organizing data in a frequency table, they're choosing from a menu of different graph representations. These include bar graphs, pictographs, line plots, or stem-and-leaf plots. Students are realizing the different types of data that these various types of graphs best represent, and then choosing one type of graph to best display their data set. This project has truly been a process where students developed and shared areas of expertise, especially when many of us chose to create our final graphs using online tools. We'll share our final graphs when we return from spring break, but have enjoyed all of the fabulous struggles embedded in our process this week.
As scientists, we've explored the difference between weather and climate. We've chased questions from our student meteorologists using some of our favorite online sources. We're also finishing final drafts of our flood awareness posters.
In ELA, we are practicing our expository writing skills with some authentic prompts, and working together to develop details in our paragraphs that both support the topic sentence and give the reader a detailed description. We've reminded ourselves that the purpose of writing is to express our thoughts and ideas, and our jobs as authors is to make sure our readers can clearly understand what we are expressing.
We continue to read widely with nonfiction as we read Malala's autobiography as well. We are learning about other individuals who have similar passions like Malala, but in various ways and places. Our margin notes and signpost annotations are helping us grasp the greater meaning, rather than simply remembering main points.
We completed our Vignettes! It's been a process, but we have created a work of Historical Fiction about the Texas Revolution! Our authors were so proud to share their characters with one another. Hope you enjoy them too! Next stop, Texas Statehood!
Enjoy your spring break!
