We have been hard at work!
This week we are wrapping up our first FIT Climb...a time where we set goals, self pace, and complete assignments! They have been documenting their work and on task!
In social studies, we've taken some time to re-establish some important guidelines for technology use. We've reviewed digital citizenship with all its rights and responsibilities. Your student should have brought a Tech Contract home for you to review and sign. They signed them at school, and in doing so, commit to abiding by these guidelines.
In ELA, we've been reviewing sentence structure and analysis. Using our strategies is extremely helpful in identifying each building block and makes our editing so clear! We've also been finishing our expository proposals for the Playground Remodel, and they were passed on to Mr. Crissey this week. We are excited to see the changes! In addition, we have been writing an expository for readers to understand our character Melody's challenges in Out of My Mind.
Speaking of Melody, we are well into our novel. We are following signposts and beginning to see a pattern in her problems -- which will lead us to understanding the main struggle she faces in the book. We have been focusing a lot on watching each event towards the beginning of the book and predicting how those might be important later. We are growing our empathy neural connections by imagining what her life would be like, unable to speak or control our bodies.
In math, we are wrapping up our study of 2-dimensional shapes. We've become experts on quadrilaterals of all sorts and can classify by angles and lines. We spent time constructing triangles, classifying them by angles and noticing relationships between side lengths and angles formed. Next week we'll review 3-D shapes and enjoy a little more construction.
We spent Friday reflecting on progress over the last 9 weeks and many students noticed that they've become increasingly more confident, accurate, and efficient with Monday match-its. This puzzle is designed to promote accuracy and students are truly noticing for themselves that depth of understanding and accuracy is more important than speed. They're also realizing that accuracy comes before efficiency, especially with subtraction across zeros and long division!
In science, we wrapped up our landslide-proof home designs. There were so many creative solutions and it was fun to bring our study of angles into other real-world applications. We also learned about the 3 main types of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. We know how these rocks are formed and their physical properties. This will help prepare us for a rock identification challenge next week!
Have a wonderful Spring Break, and we hope you all rest and rejuvenate!
