March has been full of all kinds of learning! We enjoyed the Keynotes Concert on Thursday morning -- it's neat to hear expressions of creativity and talent through songs!
In math, we're fully immersed in fabulous geometry! We notice polygons in the world around us, can describe characteristics of 5 quadrilaterals, and can use a variety of math symbols to label those attributes. We're working to classify triangles as acute, right, or obtuse and even labeled every triangle on some deluxe paper airplanes as the ultimate triangle learning experience - both challenging and fun!
SBLC scientists started the week learning about how Mt. Everest was formed as part of our rock study. We know that our dynamic Earth is always changing, and we used sugar cubes to represent rocks on their journey through the rock cycle. All enjoyed shaking the "rocks" to collect measurable data about weathering over time and discovered how tumbling against other rocks affect the edges of sugar cubes. We ended the week learning about erosion and landslides. Our engineering challenge was to design a house that could safely withstand a landslide from a nearby mountain with a slope of at least 35 degrees. Innovative solutions were shared and we may have some future SBLC engineers!
In reading, we have now met the important characters in Melody's life. We have analyzed their traits and given evidence through the characters' actions, thoughts, and words. We also have looked closely at the relationships between characters. Understanding that helps us make sense of how characters act, and predict outcomes when situations arise. Readers are working on slowing down in their reading, thinking about what they are thinking, and allowing some pause to either ask questions or make connections. We've seen how creating that time to savor the words, not just devour them to get to the next part, really helps us understand the whole picture rather than stringing events together.
We've been finishing our expository proposals for the Playground Project to present to Mr. Crissey, as well as some letter writing and accuracy in our work. This week's sentence analysis focused on dialogue, and we discovered the subject and predicate was slipped in between spoken words.

Happy Weekend -- rest up...one more week until Spring Break!
