Two FULL Weeks!

We're two weeks in and they have been full...full of establishing routines, learning new processes, and cultivating new friendships.

We start off each day with a quick but meaningful check-in. It's a great way for us to come together as a homeroom and develop our listening and empathy skills.

Then it's off to Town Meeting to reinforce Dr. Schneider's message from assembly and touch base as an SBLC Family.

We've had a blast (pun intended) practicing teamwork in our Mission Impossible challenges...

...and continue to learn more about each other while getting some exercise during WOW time!

In science, we've discussed characteristics of scientists...turns out, we've been scientists all along! In social studies, we learned about how citizens contribute to communities and participated in a gallery walk to share each other's ideas.

In Language Arts, we have been learning the art of writing letters. Mrs. Forrest has been corresponding with us each individually, and we've enjoyed writing back.

Our reading focus has been finding "just right" books...those books that are not too hard, and not too easy! Ask us about the 5 finger test and the bike ride analogy!

We've enjoyed several books together, learning to share ideas and look beyond the surface level of the story. In our talk, we have been discovering how Mrs. Forrest likes to probe us with the question, "Why do you think that?" in an effort to get us to think about our ideas and prove with text evidence.

Our independent reading time has been full of one-on-one conferences, where Mrs. Forrest gets to know our books and us as readers.

Phew, again, a full two weeks! Can't wait until next week!

Remember to sit with your kiddos and talk over their 3,2,1 Blast off review of the week and sign today's entry!

We look forward to sharing even more with you next Thursday at Back to School Night.

Best,
The SBLC teachers

p.s. Mrs. Blake will be submitting this month's Scholastic order Monday afternoon...please send any on-line orders/checks in by Monday morning! :)

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
