Nuts and Bolts

SBLC NUTS AND BOLTS
2018-19

OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE

SBLC stands for Strength-Based Learning Cohort. We are a multiage learning community that nurtures healthy brain development socially, emotionally, and academically to support each member’s growth as self-driven thinkers and learners. Our multi age setting creates deeper relationships with consistency and continuity. It fosters leadership, flexibility, and acceptance. Teachers have familiarity of vertically aligned curriculum and multiple perspectives of student progress.

EMAIL BOTH TEACHERS

Emailing both teachers every time streamlines communication for all.

DISMISSAL CHANGES

Please email us before noon about any dismissal changes. If you must make a last-minute change, please call the Kiker office at 512.414.2584

NUT AWARE

We have students and a teacher with both peanut and tree nut allergies, so we request that you keep all nut products at home. Thanks for taking care of our whole community!

SBLC BLOG

Teachers post a week in review every Friday, so please subscribe and bookmark. http://kikersblc.blogspot.com/

TECHNOLOGY

SBLC students use technology as a tool to communicate clearly, access resources, and connect with a global community. As educators, we know that technology helps our students engage, respond, visualize, create, and understand topics from multiple perspectives. As part of our program, we collaborate online in authentic and purposeful ways. We promote respectful online communication and learn strategies for appropriate digital citizenship.
BIRTHDAYS
Our classrooms celebrate birthdays by singing with all 41 students in our SBLC community morning meetings. The student then has the option to be our Cheer Leader for the day to  get us off to a great start on his or her special day!
FIELD TRIPS
Each grade level attends field trips with their Kiker grade level. We have an additional SBLC end of year celebration at the Circle C pool park.
LIBRARY
Your child has the opportunity to visit the Kiker library for a lesson and check out every other week. Books are due every two weeks. Our groups will change periodically, but we will ensure they go every other week. We will encourage them to use their agenda to keep track of their library time and due dates. Kiker librarians have some open check out times when we can send small groups -- if your child finishes a book early or needs to change to a better fit book, we can send them any day during that time. You may check out books with your child as well -- check the Kiker website for those times.

TESTING

Standardized testing is ONE measure of assessment, and we monitor student progress in many other ways too. 3rd and 4th participate in district benchmark testing, typically in January. 3rd graders take reading and math STAAR in May. 4th graders take writing STAAR in April, then reading and math in May.

GRADING

Grades are based on grade-level TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). All graded work opportunities reflect concepts that have been introduced, practiced, and reteach provided. As a parent, you have the option to monitor your child’s grades on the AISD parent cloud through TEAMS.

PORTFOLIOS

We use notebooks to document our learning throughout the year. These become portfolios of our growth, our thinking, and our 3rd and 4th grade selves. We use them daily in a variety of ways.  Each quarter we will send home the portfolios for your child to share with you. They will explain the activities and artifacts, and you will have an opportunity to provide them with feedback on their work. **Notebooks may come home anytime you wish. Just have your child bring them home and then return them the next day as we need them in class.
