Recommended Reading

Brain researchers have found that there are many different aspects of the brain. Mindfulness techniques are ways that we teach the neural pathways to work together, creating an integrated mind. When you are using all parts together, the brain works in optimal state, allowing the person to work to potential, rather than in fragments.

In the SBLC, everything is on purpose. There is specific intent to each routine, methodology, and instructional strategy.

We teach the kids:
1)   Hardship is normal…difficulty isn’t IF, it’s WHEN – embrace, don’t avoid. It’s not a bad thing, it actually shapes who you are
2)   Being nervous is normal…the butterflies in your stomach aren’t bad, they are your body’s way of getting ready to handle what’s to comes
3)   Knowing that tough is normal, and nervous is normal…how we think and respond is where we can work!

Here are some books that explain research, strategies, and give support to what we do:

The Self-Driven Child - Stixrud and Johnson
A fabulous book full of strategies backed by cognitive research that explains how children can become self motivated individuals.

Emotional Agility - David
After seeing her TED talk, we had to order her book. Full of reasons and ideas to help adults and children alike become feelers who act with flexibility. Extremely important in how our emotions play such a role in decision making, relationships, and problem solving.

Again, another fabulous TED talk. Former dean of Stanford University. She lays it out there!

The Whole Brain Child – Siegel, PhD.
Blends explanation of brain based science with helpful ideas. Using these strategies helps kids grow emotionally and helps them learn to make good decisions with both words and actions independently.

Mindset – Carol Dweck
Standford professor Dweck explains the difference between having a fixed vs. growth mindset and the effects of those perspectives on how we approach the world. Extremely helpful in understanding how these mindsets affect our motivations, drives, and relationships.

Bouncing Back – Graham
Focusing on resilience – the strength to persevere.

Turnaround Tools for the Teenage Brain – Jensen
Not just for teens! Great tips on strategies to empower kids as they are developing/maturing. Very practical tips that parents/students can apply to help grow socially, emotionally, and academically.

The Conscious Parent – Tsbary, PhD.
We had the privilege of hearing her in person at a conference. She’s a psychologist who suggests that, using insight into ourselves, we can take that information to not place ourselves onto the child, but how to let the child show us who they uniquely are.

Learned Optimism – Seligman, PhD.
Studies and techniques to teach positivity as way of empowerment. Support that we can grow into a more positive perspective.

Emotionally Intelligent Parenting – Elias
Very practical, hands on techniques on how to communicate with kids and help them develop healthy emotional awareness and decision making.

Reaching Out, Learning about Each Other and the World

This week our focus has challenged us to "be the world to one," rather than just "one in the world." Discussions have run deep with how our actions and words truly have an impact on everyone around us. We also talked about how all of us: humanity and nature make the music of this world, and without our unique voice, that music is missing something. Discover what you want to add to the music. Speak up. Say something. We wrestled with big history this week. We celebrated  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock 5, Ruby Bridges, and the thousands of others who took a stand during the Civil Rights Era. To understand this better, we looked at primary source pictures -- these leaders, their actions, their speeches, their marches -- which brought them to life. We examined timelines and asked powerful questions. Again, another opportunity to look at the world -- right now -- and ask, "How can I be the world to one? What do I want to say that makes...
