This week, we have focused on a variety of mindful practices. Learning techniques of breathing that either energize or calm. brainstorming what actions mindful people show, and looking for role models of mindfulness that we might follow. We've been sharing ways together where we have used our mindful strategies, and they are fabulous sharers, learning from one another.
Today we are bringing home our portfolios, our notebooks full of wonderful work we are eager to share. Instructions are in our agendas. Enjoy, and please make sure the notebooks come back to school on Monday.
In reading, Second Grade has begun an author study of Mo Willems. We are looking at his writing style, themes in books, and contrasting and comparing his work. We also started a series, Knuffle Bunny, where we are analyzing the main character, Trixie, and the changes she undergoes through the three books. We are still learning to refine our summaries and distinguishing main idea from detail. Word Work activities are in full swing, and we are enjoying being able to apply our phonemic awareness, phonics, grammar, and spelling in unique ways.
Third Grade has embarked on a journey with A Long Walk to Water. We have just completed an Anticipation Guide, which exposed us to the geography of the setting, vocabulary, and also got us thinking about some "big" questions that have really no true or false answer. We know that this is going to take us through some deep themes and thinking, and are excited about it. In writing, we finished up some reflections on our poetry/sensory description work of the previous week.
Similes, Metaphors, Personification, OH MY! Fourth has been refining their craft in writing these with precision. We've also reached the climax in our book, Fish in a Tree. Ally finally opened up about her struggle and learned that she's not broken...she's just got dyslexia, and her teacher is right there to help her. We will be watching how she resolves her struggle in the rest of the book, knowing that her illiteracy is causing her lack of self value. We have theorized that when she learns to read, it will build her self confidence and she will begin to accept herself as a whole.
In science, we explored properties of matter and utilized several resources to solidify our understanding. We classified objects based on their various properties and then shared our ideas with classmates.
Yesterday we used our COWs (computers on wheels) to access this very blog! After becoming familiar with some of the resources on this site, we tested the properties of different materials in a virtual lab. We really enjoyed the first of many science-tehnology integrations this year!

In math this week all three grade levels completed Sunshine math and practiced their problem solving skills.. Fourth graders worked on estimating and subtracting whole numbers in the hundred thousands. Third graders used dry erase boards to practice estimating and subtracting with regrouping. They also regrouped over zeros. Have them show you and practice at home. Second graders learned how to regroup with 2-digit numbers. We started out using pictures to help us understand how to take one ten from the tens column and give it to the ones column. We are working on understanding when to group.
