Welcome Back!

Happy January! We are so happy to be back in the swing of our regular routine! It's been exciting catching up with one another!

In language arts, we have jumped right in to nonfiction reading. Second grade is exploring biographies about true American heroes. We started with Albert Einstein, Jackie Robinson, and Amelia Earhart. We've been learning about their accomplishments, but more than that, we have been examining the character traits that enabled them to become inspirational role models. After reading and charting together, we are learning expository writing structure and writing our first 5 paragraph essay. Third Grade is delving into understanding real world problems by understanding the plight of endangered species. We have examined graphs, maps, headings, and other nonfiction text features through Chelsea Clinton's book, It's Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired, and Get Going! and our Time for Kids periodicals. They participated in a "Bear Activity" to give them an authentic look at how an environment affects animal survival. We learned that animals can compete or cooperate in order to utilize resources in an area. Fourth Grade has jumped right in to the Young Readers Adaptation of Boys in the Boat. We've been analyzing the main characters and how the events of their lives are unfolding. It's amazing how an author can keep you at the edge of your seat, even when you know the outcome! Fourth Grade also explored Google Docs, and how to share their pieces online with Mrs. Forrest. Our jaws dropped to the floor as we discovered that both of us can be working on the same piece, at the same time, from different computers!!

In math we all have been learning about Personal Financial Literacy this week. Fourth graders learned about fixed expenses, variable expenses, profit, wants, and needs. We also looked at four business and calculated their profits. Third graders learned about having a job, making and income, supply, and demand. We wrote about supply and demand scenarios and shared them with our friends. Second graders focused on our new vocabulary words and ended the week with a game called Bank Balance Battle. This helped us learn more about balances, deposits and withdrawals.

Second grade's focus in social studies was changes over time. We identified how people, locations, and behaviors change over time. We even observed some side-by-side images of Austin...things have changed a bit over the past 20 years!

After reading about Helen Keller and Clara Barton, third graders compared and contrasted leaders who have impacted history and the traits and qualities they share.

Fourth graders used nonfiction to investigate the regions, housing, and resources of late-prehistoric Indian tribes.

A reminder that all science fair projects are due Tuesday, January 12. We will be presenting them in class, so it would be great if your scientist could practice presenting at least once over the weekend. That way, they will feel even more comfortable sharing their project with their peers!

Enjoy your weekend,
Team SBLC

Texas Regions

*Parents, this is an in-class assignment. Hello, SBLC Super Stars! Today, you are explorers of the four Texas regions. If you get finished--AND your have double checked your work--please make a comment that includes your name and something you enjoyed learning today! Directions : Carefully read below and use the links to investigate the characteristics and history of each region. Remember to write neatly and double check spelling...everything you do deserves your best effort! :) 1. A  sub-region  is a smaller part of a region or area. What are the sub-regions within each Texas region? Look at the picture below to see how to record your findings in your notebook. Now, click here to find your answers:  http://bookbuilder.cast.org/view_print.php?book=41216 2. On the next two pages in your notebook, create a half-page "fact sheet" for each region. Set your pages up first! Use a ruler to make straight lines and create a half page for each region. Then write:
