Happy New Year!

Welcome back to the third 9 weeks, SBLC families! We've been busy refreshing expectations and energizing our purposeful routines. We added a new routine called, "Mindful Minute" before our Take Off and Landing reflections each day. We watched a video of some high schoolers in California that do it each day, and learned from them why it's so helpful. We find too, that it's calming, it helps us review our day, and be more present in the moment.  We've also considered our Quality Work responsibilities and set a math and ELA goal to support our habits as learners.

In math, everyone has enjoyed concrete fraction experiences to wake up our brains after winter break. We all built fraction puzzles, predicting the fractional relationship for each row and then creating a fraction resource for our math notebooks.

4th graders went on to create rulers, then to divide and label the fair shares. This led to thoughtful discussions about equivalent fractions and how to compare fraction relationships. We'll continue with this work next week. 3rd graders used paper brownies to better understand unit fractions and to then write equations to show how they add to one whole unit.

SBLC scientists are wrapping up science fair projects. Our notebooks and checklists have been such useful tools as we manage this opportunity. As a reminder, all final project boards and notebooks are due in class on Tuesday 1/16.

In ELA and Reading, we refreshed our memory of analyzing poetry. We have a process to follow when making our margin notes, and it is so helpful in interpreting inferences. We have been working with complex sentences, conjunctions, and commas, re-familiarizing ourselves with the important jobs each piece of grammar does. Our independent reading has expanded to some thematic work, and we are eagerly enjoying new books and genres.

In social studies, we began our look at the missions of Texas. We've got some great resources online from the Bob Bullock Museum, as well as from San Antonio historical sites.

Enjoy the weekend!
